Young Goodman Brown starts off with a man from Salem village who is about to depart his wife on a voyage into the forest. This voyage is a mysterious voyage when you first start the book as no detail is given on why he is leaving. The man appears be young as compared to the other characters in the story. The voyage that he is going on is one that the young man knows is dangerous as he will be meeting someone in the forest that will be changing his life. When he leaves into the forest he meets an older man who he describes is "about fifty years old, apparently in the same rank of life as Goodman Brown, and bearing a considerable resemblance to him, though perhaps more in expression than features."(Pg 959-960) The staff of the man he meets in the forest gives the young man a bad feeling saying that they are serpents. From what is said one would think that the staff and his people are the devil. Soon after leaving they stop when the young man says he has gone far enough exclaiming "Too Far! Too Far!" (Pg960)If you can see things the way I did when reading this story, after going into the forest with the supposed devils, he has looked fear and death in the face and has had enough and now wants to turn back...
