One main reason that contributes to the United States' current educational system not adequately preparing business workers and professionals is that many students are choosing to receive their education online. Although it can be convenient to students, there are many challenges and inefficiencies to receiving an online education.
Probably the most important challenge of online education is that students feel somewhat isolated. Related to the isolation factor described above, some online students report that they miss the personal contact of spoken, in-person communication. Although it is possible to get to know another person through email and discussion groups, many students do miss the inter-personal connection. Online communication often lacks in nonverbal communication cues such as voice tonality, facial expressions, and eye contact. Online education also reduces the opportunity for immediate clarification; therefore, feedback does not exist. Although instructors in the on-line environment will certainly respond to student questions and clarifications, the process can be lengthy and, at most times, frustrating for students.
In addition to the isolation factor, many students find that the online environment at home, limits their ability to learn in a way that matches their learning style. Especially for visual and auditory learners, who need the presence of a spoken word, this can be a real challenge...
