Personal Statement
My academic objective in applying to Cambridge College is to obtain a M. Ed. degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. As an undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico in Humacao, I majored in Secondary Education, minored in English, studied French, and took a number of grammar, linguistics, and British and American Literature courses.
While I was completing my undergraduate studies, my leisure time was committed to the American Field Service Intercultural Programs (AFS) where I worked as a volunteer. AFS brought students from different parts of the world to live with Puerto Rican families for a period of one year. My work consisted of finding families, called host parents, who were willing to host a foreign student for twelve months without any kind of economical remuneration. Once the student was in Puerto Rico, he/she would attend a public school and would try to learn our language and our culture as soon as possible. Besides, finding host families, I was also the students' counselor; the person who helped them adjust to the new culture and solve any kind of difficulty they would confront. Sometimes the only way to communicate with these students was through English, in which, most of the time, they were very fluent and proficient, even though it was their second, third, or even fourth language...
