Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Gail Winfrey was born January 29, 1954. She lived on a farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her unmarried parents Vernon Winfrey and Vernita Lee left her right after she was born to be raised with her maternal grandparents until she was six years old. At the age of six she moved to Milwaukee to live with her mother, she was a housekeeper and was rarely at home. During this time at the age of nine she was sexually abused by a teenage cousin and then by other male relatives and friends. (Galegroup) At the age of thirteen her mother sent her to live with her father in Nashville, Tennessee. Oprah said her father nearly saved her life and changed it drastically. He was very strict and provided her with a lot of love and guidance. Her father required her to read a new book weekly, and learn new vocabulary words each day. (Galegroup)
