Dionysius is the Greek god of wine and revelry. Dionysius brought entirely new rites and a new spirit into Greek worship. Unlike many of the other Greek gods who were often cold, forbidding and distant, Dionysius lived many years among mortals and seemed to understand them better. Some even say that Dionysius took the spot of being the twelfth of the great Olympians. ... Together Zeus and Semele conceived a son, Dionysius. ... For three months, Dionysius was carried inside the thigh of the god and was delivered after three months. Because of this incident, Dionysius is often referred to as the “Twice-Born God.”
To keep the child safe away from Hera, Zeus had tried many times to hide Dionysius in any way. ... The nymphs nurtured Dionysius throughout his youth.
Eventually, Dionysius arrived at Phrygia. Cybele, the Phrygian mother goddess welcomed Dionysius and exercised a powerful influence on Dionysius. She taught him religious rites and soon, Dionysius started creating his own rites based on things taught by Cybele.
Worshipers celebrated Dionysius as a kind of fertility god.
