OCD
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is potentially disabling condition that can continue to persist throughout someone's entire life. An individual who has OCD becomes trapped in a pattern of repetitive behaviors and thoughts that are distressing, unproductive, and very difficult to overcome. OCD can disrupt a person's ability to function at school, work, and at home. Most people with OCD realize that they have a problem; they know that there thoughts are exaggerated and that there behavior isn't necessary.
What causes OCD? Doctors used to think that OCD was a result of past experiences, but now they believe is has to do more with biological factors. The reason behind this is that a majority of patients respond well to medication that affects the neurotransmitter serotonin, which means it has a neurobiological basis. Therefore OCD is no longer attributed to attitudes a person learned in childhood.
OCD can also be accompanied by other disorders such as: depression, eat disorders, attention deficit disorder, and other anxiety disorders. Theses other disorders make OCD harder to treat and diagnose...
