Thomas Carlyle, a Scottish philosopher who lived during the eighteenth century, said these words. It reveals the importance of reading and how what we read greatly affects our lives. Frederick Douglass knew this. "Learning to Read and Write" is an essay by Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass was born a slave in Maryland in 1818. He is best known for his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass from which "Learning to Read and Write" is taken. In this story Douglass tells how he eventually learned how to read and write. It describes how he succeeded in educating himself and the challenges he faced in the process...
