This song entitled Aqueous Transmission, written by Brandon Boyd of the hit band Incubus, is an extended metaphor comparing a river to discovering hidden emotions. The title is extremely vital to dissect so that one may understand this song to its fullest extent. Aqueous means “of, like or formed by water” and transmission means “something transmitted.” Therefore, this song is about how the speaker’s emotions are being transmitted through the water; that is why he is drifting on this path “down the river”. My thesis for this song is that if someone is free to experience his emotions then he is able to dissect those emotions and will have a better understand of his reality. The first line “I’m floating down a river” sets the stage for the whole poem. The first line of the song directly shows the reader that the tone of the song is to be read or listened to slowly. Line eleven is also intertwined with the whole meaning of the river and its task in the song. It identifies how the speaker is “floating down a river named emotion” which is the only reference in the song to what the river’s figurative meaning is. This is how line one and line eleven are intertwined; the speaker is staying above the water and therefore is not drowning in his emotions. He is not overwhelmed even though he does not have complete control over where the river might take him. Line one is repeated at the last line to show that he will always be figuring out his emotions. Another important aspect of this song is that this individual is alone which is evident in the first line and the last line of the song. This could also go back to how the speaker knows himself better then anyone else; therefore, when he figures out his emotions by himself that is the best thing for him. Imagery is a key technique that Boyd to show the reader how the person is going down the river. This also shows the individual’s solitude, and imagery is used though out the whole song.
