In this assignment I plan to outline the case for the inclusion of Religious Education in schools and will discuss the view that R.E can make a positive contribution to life in a contemporary plural society, to do this I will include a consideration of the Northern Ireland core syllabus.
To begin I will briefly describe how Religious Education in schools came about. I will then outline my case for the inclusion for R.E in schools by exploring some of the arguments that have been proposed from different personalities within education, some of these will include the work of Ronald Goldman, John Greer and Brenda Watson along with my own views as a student teacher of R.E within the current education system in Northern Ireland. Continuing on from my case I will then describe how R.E can make a positive contribution to life in a contemporary plural society such as the United Kingdom, and will specifically refer to Northern Ireland and take into account the current core syllabus and how it can be beneficial to the individual pupil and to society in general. To follow on from this I will then look at the other side of the argument and why some may say that R.E can make a negative contribution to society and has no relevance in today's education system...
