Beowulf upholds all that is good throughout the story, including the comitatus code. The comitatus code was a code of honor. It was to be upheld by all those that were honorable. Beowulf is fighting for three main reasons: vengeance, glory, and for others. Many sources say that Beowulf's main theme is honor and loyalty. "The comitatus code is when thanes swore devotion to their leader and vowed to fight boldly, to the death if necessary, for him. If the leader should fall, his thanes must avenge his life. For his part, the leader rewarded his thanes with treasure, protection, and land" (Baldwin 7). The code of the comitatus is the central point of this story.
