Function of the Thyroid Gland
The thyroid gland is just one of the glands in the endocrine system. The primary
job of the thyroid gland is to produce hormones that influence every organ, tissue and
cell in the body and help to regulate the body’s metabolism. The thyroid gland plays a
major role in the everyday function of the human body.
The thyroid is a small gland located in the front of the neck. It is made of two
halves or lobes, that sit along the trachea and are joined together by a narrow band of
thyroid tissue called isthmus. A normal gland is brownish-red and only weighs about one
ounce. ... The follicles are where the thyroid gland stores its hormones.
The basic function of the thyroid gland is to take iodine, found in many foods, and convert it into thyroid hormones: thyroxin (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
