Kurt Vonnegut, in The Sirens of Titans, uses mythological symbolism and extensive imagery to connote on the theme. Vonnegut's war between the Martians and Earth parallels that of Greek Mythology in the war between the Titans and Zeus.
Siren and Titan, which are used in the title, are both figures from Greek mythology. The Titans according to Edith Hamilton's Mythology are the children of heaven and earth. They give birth to Zeus and the other Olympian gods. The Sirens were children of the Titans that lived on an island in the Sea. They would enchant passing sailors to their death with their intoxicating songs. Vonnegut uses the Titans to represent the state of the dominant religions on Earth. The Titans were masters of the universe before they are prophesized to be dethroned by the gods. Yet the Titans attempted to prevent the prophecy from coming true, but their efforts fail and resulting in war between them and the gods...
